ST. ANNE, JAMAICA – In June, 2007, my wife and I went on our first Jamaican vacation. We flew from Atlanta, Georgia non-stop to Jamaica, landed at the airport in Montego Bay, Jamaica, and traveled by bus to our resort hotel, Club Ambience, located in the northern coast of Jamaica about mid-Island.

The flight from Atlanta was great, but the bus ride from Montego Bay to our resort hotel in St. Anne was not as wonderful. There were several stops along the way with opportunities for the locals to take our money. We spent $300 before we knew what happened. These bus trips are designed to take tourists through the market areas on the way to their resort hotels. If you travel to Jamaica and take a bus to your hotel, you may wish to stay on the bus if you want to keep your cash.
When we arrived at Club Ambience, we were greeted like royalty. There was a rum punch drink waiting for us at the lobby where we checked in. The hotel staff couldn’t have been nicer. It’s almost as if we were their only guests.
Club Ambience is an all-inclusive adults-only resort hotel, which means NO KIDS. That’s great for us since our child was already grown at the time and we didn’t want to take a vacation where we had to babysit other people’s children. The other advantage of going to an adults-only vacation resort hotel is the hotel had a nude beach. This is something that I certainly took advantage of on several occasions. Both my wife and I visited the nude beach and participated in the no-clothes experience. This was an interesting first-time experience for me. It was very odd, however, to be walking toward the shower area prior to leaving the nude beach, only to walk by a lady who is old enough to be your grandmother, and not have the lady give any indication that she was the least bit concerned that she was completely nude. In fact, most of the women that I saw while on the nude beach who were completely nude were older women. The younger women apparently were too modest to go completely nude and settled, for the most part, for going topless only. Women over 40, however, apparently didn’t care if men saw them completely naked and, to be quite honest, neither did I.
Club Ambience couldn’t have been a nicer choice in all-inclusive resort hotels. We stayed there for 10 days, visiting the Island a couple of times by tour bus, going horseback riding in the mountains-to-sea trails, and doing some shopping.
The Island of Jamaica itself is rather poor and underdeveloped. The people who don’t work in government positions or in tourism are quite poor as well. We felt sorry for some of them when we stopped at roadside shops; often we bought things we didn’t even need just to supplement the economy.
We thoroughly enjoyed Jamaica, however, and would return again if we get the chance. I have created a video that I think captures the essence of our 10 days in Jamaica. Please enjoy watching it. And, sorry, the video doesn’t contain any images of our nude beach experience. You’ll just have to trust me that we did go “au natural.”
